Pinhole Camera Images

I am seeking ways to connect the visuals above and below the surface, to explore and connect with the hidden life of the river. To find ways to reveal the ebb and flow, to look for patterns that aren’t immediately obvious on the surface. Camera-less photographic techniques provide an alternative experience of the river above and below the surface. The river capriciously teased my attempts, testing my connection and commitment to it, and eventually responded.

Unforeseen forms and patterns reveal the water’s swirling, flowing and carrying of sand and plant life. The atmosphere of place is gently exposed with soft imagery imbued with shadow and shape overlapping and twining together. Night and day with moonlight, sunlight, and cloud impact the river’s mood.  These images reflect and embody rushing waters, muddy and dank with floods and debris, to periods of mirrored surface with hidden currents flowing hard and strong. Overlaying of above and below images emulate the complexity of the river, its life and soul. It chooses how and when this is revealed.

Like many artists,  I have found a place which is ancient, rich in history and abundant with life to connect and build a relationship with. The river demands respect, bravery, sensitivity. It demands presence and an openness to experience beyond the visual.  A constant connecting and separating makes me more than an observer. These images in above  |  below  are a gift from the river to me.
